Breaking the Silence through Art: API Chaya's 18th Annual Candlelight Vigil

Please join us for our annual candlelight vigil as we honor and remember Susanna Blackwell, Phoebe Dizon, and Veronica Laureta, as well as all those that have lost their lives to domestic and sexual violence.

Susanna Blackwell, Phoebe Dizon, and Veronica Laureta were shot and killed at the King County Courthouse in 1995 during Susanna Blackwell's divorce proceeding by Timothy Blackwell, Susanna's estranged husband. This tragedy organized the API community as a group of women (known as our founding mothers) came together to form the Asian Pacific Islander Women and Family Safety Center (currently known as API Chaya). While the tragedy and loss of Susanna Blackwell, Phoebe Dizon, and Veronica Laureta occurred 18 years ago, we continue to see the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence in our communities. This year we also would like to honor our sister in India, Damini, who was brutally gang raped and did not survive the injuries from the assault.

Join us to explore the power of art and media in breaking the silence at this year's candlelight vigil. Together we will continue the conversation about how to better support survivors and end domestic and sexual violence and abuse.

As part of the first South Asian International Documentary Festival, API Chaya presents...

A Screening of 'After the Rape: The Mukhtar Mai Story' and film shorts on Delhi Rising, followed by a moderated discussion. As a community, we will reflect on the recent gang-rape and death of Damini/Nirbhaya/Amanat, a Delhi woman, and the ensuing protests, dubbed Delhi Rising. We will discuss how these recent events help raise awareness around violence against women, and particularly sexual violence, and whether this is enough to bring about change in South Asia as well as in our communities here. This forum is sponsored and will be moderated by API-Chaya.
