Age Groups
Young Adults Focus (ages 18-25)
We present parts of our core curriculum in workshops for student groups and presentations for classes at colleges and universities. Student groups that we have worked with over the years include the UW Filipino American Student Association (UW FASA), Northwest Filipino American Student Alliance, AnakBayan Seattle, UW Ates, Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Sigma Alpha Kappa Delta Phi Sorority (UW), UW Kuyas, and many more. We have consistently presented at community colleges and universities, such as Shoreline Community College, Bellevue Community College, and the University of Washington. Young adults take on various volunteer roles and have been instrumental as youth mentors and natural helpers. They have also developed anti-violence educational and fundraising events and cultural shows. These include the APIWFSC Annual Memorial Candlelight Vigil, “Umaga” multimedia show, UW Dialogues, and many more.
Youth Focus (ages 12-18)
We believe that youth are important teachers within our society. We are currently working with two high schools, which are Roosevelt High School and Tyee Educational Complex (which includes three small school in one: Global Connections, Academy of Citizenship and Empowerment, and Odyssey). We facilitate pullout groups during the school day once a week. The purpose of these groups is to develop awareness around dating violence and to help them create boundaries for themselves in order to develop healthy relationships, not only with partners, but also with friends, families, and communities.
In the summer of 2002, we conducted a youth summer retreat, "API Youth United Against Violence" at Seabeck, Washington. In 2004, students at Roosevelt High School developed an API After-School Leadership Group, which built upon the work begun during the in-school groups. Over the years, students have become involved in creating anti-violence hip-hop shows, traveling to the 2005 Puerto Rico Summit, creating their own presentations/workshops, becoming peer advocates/natural helpers, speaking at the Annual Candlelight Vigil, working throughout the community, and much more.
